The difference test
- Undertone
-
Same undertone
Both are warm first, with gold in the skin, and gold jewelry suits both. The tell is what neither can wear: cool grey and silver turn a Warm Spring grey, and cool charcoal grey or icy blue does the same to a Warm Autumn.
- Depth
-
Warm Autumn is deeper
Hold chocolate brown, then honey tan, under your chin. A Warm Autumn looks anchored and finished in the chocolate; a Warm Spring looks weighed down by it and brighter in honey tan or golden brown.
- Chroma
-
Warm Spring is clearer
Hold golden yellow beside mustard, then warm turquoise beside warm teal. A Warm Spring sparkles in the clear versions and looks dimmed in the earthy ones; a Warm Autumn looks overexposed in the clear ones and settled in the earthier pair.
- Contrast
-
Similar contrast
Both sit at a medium level of contrast, so neither needs black and white. Cream with camel suits both, and the darker partner is golden brown for a Warm Spring and tobacco brown for a Warm Autumn.

Warm Autumn and Warm Spring, also called True Autumn and True Spring, are the two seasons whose first trait is warmth. Both have gold in the skin, both suit gold and camel, and both look grey or sallow in silver, cool greys and icy colors. Golden or copper hair and warm eyes fit both descriptions, so the undertone test that settles most mix-ups says "warm" twice here.
What separates them is how the warmth shows. A Warm Spring is lighter and clearer: its colors are sunny and bright, like golden yellow, warm coral and poppy orange. A Warm Autumn is deeper and earthier, the same warmth turned toward pumpkin orange, olive green, mustard and terracotta. On the wrong side, spring colors look loud on an autumn face, and autumn colors make a spring face look heavy and muddy.
Many colors come in a spring and an autumn version: golden yellow and mustard, warm turquoise and warm teal, grass green and olive green, golden brown and chocolate brown. Comparing these pairs in daylight shows which half of the year you belong to.
From spring to autumn, piece by piece
Moving from Warm Spring to Warm Autumn means deepening and softening. Golden yellow becomes mustard, warm coral becomes terracotta, poppy orange becomes pumpkin orange, warm turquoise becomes warm teal, grass green becomes olive green, and golden brown becomes chocolate brown or tobacco brown. Warm beige can trade places with warm khaki.
Fabrics follow. A Warm Spring looks fresh in crisp cotton, linen, light knits and clear, cheerful prints. A Warm Autumn looks right in tweed, suede, corduroy and textured wool, with prints that look woven or painted rather than bright and graphic.
How to tell if you are a Warm Autumn or a Warm Spring
- 1
Pick a spring and an autumn color
Golden yellow and mustard work best, or warm turquoise and warm teal. Plain fabric without a print shows the effect most clearly.
- 2
Find steady daylight
Stand at a window on a bright day with no makeup on. Warm lamps make the two seasons look alike, so skip the evening.
- 3
Compare the clear and the earthy shade
Hold each under your chin for a few seconds. The right one makes your eyes look clearer and your skin even; the wrong one either overpowers you or makes you look dull.
- 4
Check depth with brown
Hold chocolate brown, then honey tan. If this test and the last one point the same way, you have a strong lead.

FAQ
What are True Autumn and True Spring?
They are other names for Warm Autumn and Warm Spring, the two seasons whose first trait is warmth. "True" means the season in its purest form, without a strong lean toward light, deep, soft or bright. This site uses the warm names, and the palettes on this page are the same under either name.
Can a Warm Autumn wear coral?
A browner coral, yes. Warm coral at full brightness tends to look loud on a Warm Autumn, but a coral that leans toward terracotta usually suits it. Terracotta itself is the safest answer, and pumpkin orange works as the brighter accent.
Can a Warm Spring wear brown?
Yes, in the lighter, golden browns. Golden brown and honey tan are Warm Spring neutrals and look fresh with cream. Chocolate brown is usually too heavy near a Warm Spring face, so keep it for shoes, belts and bags, or replace it with camel.
Do red hair and freckles mean Warm Autumn or Warm Spring?
Either. Copper or red hair with freckles fits both, so the rest of your coloring decides. Light, clear, bright eyes and lighter golden-red hair point toward Warm Spring; deeper auburn hair and warm brown, hazel or green eyes point toward Warm Autumn.
Gold or silver for Warm Spring and Warm Autumn?
Gold for both. Silver is among the worst colors of Warm Spring, and cool metals look grey against Warm Autumn skin as well. A Warm Spring usually suits bright, polished yellow gold; a Warm Autumn suits brass, copper and gold with a brushed or antique finish.
Which makeup suits each of them?
Warm Spring makeup is fresh: warm coral or poppy lips, peachy blush and golden shimmer on the lids. Warm Autumn makeup is earthier: terracotta or brick lips, bronzer, and olive or bronze eyeshadow. If a lipstick looks bright and separate from your face, try its earthier twin.
Can I change from Warm Spring to Warm Autumn as I get older?
Your undertone usually stays the same, but hair often darkens over the years, and that can shift your overall depth. If your hair has darkened since you were last told your season, look again with your current natural coloring. The free reading can be run again at any time.
