The difference test
- Undertone

Soft Summer leans warmer
Light Summer is the cooler of the two. Hold periwinkle under your chin, then rose brown: periwinkle brightening you while rose brown looks dull points to Light Summer, rose brown warming you while periwinkle looks thin points to Soft Summer.
- Depth
-
Soft Summer is deeper
Put powder blue and slate navy side by side at your chin in daylight. On a Light Summer the navy casts shadows under the eyes and the powder blue looks easy; on a Soft Summer the powder blue fades the face and the navy frames it.
- Chroma
-
Similar clarity
Both are soft, so every color in either palette has a little grey in it. Next to lavender or mauve, a kelly green looks loud on either season: this row tells you that you belong among the summers, not which of the two.
- Contrast
-
Similar contrast
Both are low in contrast, with no strong jump between hair, eyes and skin. Tonal outfits suit both: light grey-blue with powder blue for one, soft grey with soft blue-grey for the other. A stark black and white look overwhelms either.

Light Summer and Soft Summer both look calm rather than striking. Hair, eyes and skin sit close together, the hair is often ash-toned, the eyes soft grey, blue or green, and gold tends to look brassy. Both palettes are cool and muted, which is why people go back and forth between them.
Depth is what splits them. A Light Summer's coloring is light overall, like a pale watercolor, and powder blue, light rose pink and lavender look as if they belong to the face. A Soft Summer is medium in depth, with mousy or ash brown hair and eyes that read darker, so its colors carry more weight and more grey: dusty rose, sage, mauve and slate navy.
A smaller difference lies in the undertone: Light Summer is clearly cool, while Soft Summer sits nearer neutral. So a Light Summer in rose brown can look muddy, and a Soft Summer in powder blue can look washed out.
Turning one wardrobe into the other
A Light Summer who turns out to be a Soft Summer can keep most hues and make them deeper and dustier: powder blue becomes soft blue-grey, light rose pink becomes dusty rose, lavender becomes mauve, soft aqua becomes sage. Light grey-blue gives way to slate navy as the dark basic.
The other direction lightens everything: rose brown and soft charcoal step back for cool taupe and light grey-blue, and sage lightens into soft aqua.
How to find out if you are a Light Summer or a Soft Summer
- 1
Find a pastel and a deeper top
Powder blue or light rose pink for the light test; slate navy, rose brown or mauve for the deeper one.
- 2
Take off makeup, stand in daylight
Indirect light from a window shows depth best; harsh direct sun can wash your face out and blur the test.
- 3
Squint at your reflection
Squinting blurs detail and leaves only light and dark. If the pastel melts into your face, you are light; if the deeper top melts in and the pastel stands apart, you are medium.

FAQ
Can a Light Summer wear Soft Summer colors?
The lighter ones, yes. Dusty rose, soft blue-grey and sage are close enough to the Light Summer palette to wear, especially away from the face. Slate navy, rose brown and soft charcoal tend to be too heavy and can make light coloring look tired.
Can a Soft Summer wear pastels?
Pastels with some grey in them can work when a medium neutral such as soft grey or slate navy gives them weight. Very light, sweet pastels on their own, like powder blue or baby pink, often leave a Soft Summer looking washed out.
Is my hair light enough for Light Summer?
Natural light ash blond to light ash brown is typical of Light Summer, while Soft Summer hair is usually medium: ash brown, dark blond or mousy. Hair is only one part, though. Your eyes and your coloring as a whole count as much, and a dyed color says little about your natural depth.
Should a Light Summer or Soft Summer wear navy?
Both can, in the right shade. A Soft Summer wears slate navy as its main dark neutral. A Light Summer does better with a lighter, greyed blue such as light grey-blue, and keeps darker navy for trousers or shoes rather than a top.
What makeup suits a Light Summer vs a Soft Summer?
Light Summer suits sheer, light shades: rose or pale pink lips, a cool pink blush and soft grey or taupe eyeshadow. Soft Summer takes a little more depth and more grey: mauve and dusty rose lips, a rose brown blush and grey-brown liner. Neither suits an orange bronzer.
Can you be both Light Summer and Soft Summer?
You are one season, but you can sit near the border. If your coloring falls between light and medium, the middle tones of both palettes may suit you. The edges still decide: powder blue or slate navy, whichever looks like part of your face.
