Soft Autumn vs Warm Autumn (True Autumn)
Both are warm, earthy autumns, and clarity decides: muted mustard and soft rust suit one, mustard and terracotta the other.

The difference test
- Undertone
-
Warm Autumn leans warmer
Wear oyster, then cream, close to your face. Oyster has a trace of grey that a Soft Autumn wears easily; on a Warm Autumn it makes the skin look dull, and the yellow in cream brings the glow back.
- Depth
-
Warm Autumn is deeper
Hold chocolate brown under your chin, then camel. A Warm Autumn, medium to deep, looks framed by the chocolate; a Soft Autumn often looks heavy in it and more at ease in camel or warm taupe.
- Chroma
-
Warm Autumn is clearer
This is the row that decides. Hold mustard next to muted mustard, or terracotta next to soft rust: if the stronger color lights your face up, you lean Warm Autumn; if it seems to arrive before you do, Soft Autumn.
- Contrast
-
Warm Autumn has more contrast
A Warm Autumn carries a medium contrast, so tobacco brown against cream looks framed on it. A Soft Autumn is low in contrast and looks best in close tones, like camel with ivory. Black against pure white looks harsh on both.

Soft Autumn and Warm Autumn, also called True Autumn, share more than a name. Both lean warm, both look best in earthy colors, both wear camel and gold, and both lose their glow in black and in cold, bright shades. With hazel or green eyes and golden-brown hair, you could fit either description, which is why the two get confused so often.
The deciding trait is clarity. Warm Autumn coloring is rich: the colors that suit it are saturated and full of gold, so it can wear pumpkin orange, terracotta and mustard at full strength. Soft Autumn coloring is muted, as if a little grey had been mixed in, and the same colors look loud on it. Soft Autumn also sits closer to neutral and is a little lighter overall.
Most colors exist in both palettes in two versions: mustard and muted mustard, terracotta and soft rust, olive green and khaki olive, pumpkin orange and dusty peach. Holding the two versions side by side is the fastest way to see which autumn you are.
How a wardrobe moves from one autumn to the other
Going from Warm to Soft Autumn means turning the volume down, not changing the hue. Mustard becomes muted mustard, terracotta becomes soft rust, olive green becomes khaki olive, pumpkin orange becomes dusty peach, and chocolate brown becomes coffee brown. Camel stays, and warm khaki trades for khaki.
Fabrics follow the same logic. A Soft Autumn looks right in suede, brushed cotton and heathered knits, and in prints where the colors blend. A Warm Autumn can carry tweed, corduroy, polished leather and bolder paisleys in its own colors. Going the other way, from Soft to Warm, add saturation one piece at a time, starting with a scarf.
How to tell if you are a Soft Autumn or a True Autumn
- 1
Pair up muted and rich fabrics
Find two versions of the same color: mustard and muted mustard, or terracotta and soft rust. Clothes, towels or colored paper all work as long as they are close to the swatches above.
- 2
Work in daylight, without makeup
Sit facing a window around midday. Warm lamps add gold to everyone and push the test toward Warm Autumn.
- 3
Hold each pair under your chin
Switch between the muted and the rich color several times, watching your skin rather than the fabric. Notice which one evens out redness and which one makes you look tired.
- 4
Repeat with chocolate brown and camel
This checks depth. If the chocolate looks heavy while camel looks easy, it supports Soft Autumn.

FAQ
Are True Autumn and Warm Autumn one season or two?
One. True Autumn and Warm Autumn are two names for the same season, the autumn whose first trait is warmth. Soft Autumn is its muted neighbor. This site uses the name Warm Autumn, but every palette color and test on this page applies to True Autumn in exactly the same way.
Can a Soft Autumn wear Warm Autumn colors?
The calmer ones, yes. Camel, warm khaki and cream suit a Soft Autumn well, and olive green often works in small doses. Pumpkin orange, mustard and terracotta at full strength tend to look louder than the face, so choose their muted versions instead: dusty peach, muted mustard and soft rust.
Do muted colors look bad on a Warm Autumn?
Not bad, usually just flat. A Warm Autumn in khaki olive or warm taupe tends to look tired rather than wrong, because the coloring has more richness than the fabric. Muted colors work as neutrals in a Warm Autumn wardrobe, but the colors near the face should be the saturated ones.
Neither season wears black. What do I wear instead?
Black is among the worst colors of both. A Soft Autumn replaces it with coffee brown or khaki, a Warm Autumn with chocolate brown or tobacco brown. For a dark suit or coat, a deep brown looks just as formal as black and keeps the face warm.
What hair color suits a Soft Autumn vs a True Autumn?
Soft Autumns usually look best with soft golden brown, dark blond or a gentle caramel, highlights blended rather than striped. True Autumns can carry richer color: copper, auburn, golden brown and warm chestnut. Very bright red and blue-black tend to fight both.
What makeup works for Soft Autumn vs Warm Autumn?
A Soft Autumn suits dusty peach blush, soft rust or warm rose lips and taupe or khaki eyeshadow, all with a satin finish. A Warm Autumn can wear terracotta or pumpkin lips, bronze and olive eyeshadow and a warmer bronzer. If a lipstick seems to sit on top of your face, go one step softer.
Why do I look Warm Autumn in some photos and Soft Autumn in others?
Light changes clarity and warmth more than anything else. Warm indoor lamps add gold and saturation, which pushes a photo toward Warm Autumn, and a filter can do the same, while shade and overcast light soften everything. Judge yourself in daylight from a window, and if a reading feels off, run it again in better light; it is free.
