The difference test
- Undertone
-
Same undertone
Warmth is the second trait of both, so gold flatters either. It shows greyed on a Soft Autumn, as in warm taupe, and darkened on a Deep Autumn, as in chocolate brown, while cold colors like cobalt blue or icy mint dull both.
- Depth
-
Deep Autumn is deeper
Hold espresso near your face, then oyster. A Deep Autumn looks defined in espresso and faded in oyster; a Soft Autumn looks swallowed by the espresso and calm in the oyster.
- Chroma
-
Deep Autumn is clearer
Muted mustard and mustard gold are about equally light, so they test clarity alone. If mustard gold makes your eyes look brighter, you lean Deep Autumn; if it looks harsh and muted mustard blends into your skin, Soft Autumn.
- Contrast
-
Deep Autumn has more contrast
A Deep Autumn has medium to high contrast and wears it well: cream against espresso or chocolate brown gives it shape. A Soft Autumn is low in contrast and looks calmer within a few shades, like ivory with camel. Black against pure white looks severe on both.

Soft Autumn and Deep Autumn, also called Dark Autumn, are the two ends of the autumn family. They are not neighbors: Warm Autumn sits between them. They still get mixed up, because both lean warm, both wear olive, rust, mustard and brown, and both avoid icy colors. Brown hair and hazel eyes fit both descriptions, and indoor photos tend to make hair look darker than it is.
Two traits separate them, and both point the same way. Deep Autumn is darker, so it needs colors with weight, and richer, so it needs them saturated. Soft Autumn is lighter and muted: the colors that suit it have a little grey in them and sit at a medium depth. Warmth is the second trait of both, so gold suits both and settles nothing.
In practice, the two palettes hold the same hues at different strengths: khaki olive against deep olive, soft rust against brick red, muted mustard against mustard gold, warm taupe against warm charcoal, and ivory against cream.
Switching between Soft and Deep Autumn
If you have been dressing as one and turn out to be the other, the hues can stay while their strength changes. From Soft to Deep, khaki olive becomes deep olive, soft rust becomes brick red or burnt orange, muted mustard becomes mustard gold, warm taupe becomes warm charcoal, and coffee brown becomes espresso. From Deep to Soft, run the same list backward.
Finishes change with the colors. A Soft Autumn looks best in matte, brushed and heathered fabrics, suede, washed linen and prints where the colors melt into each other. A Deep Autumn can carry leather, velvet, dense knits and prints with clear edges in its own dark colors.
How to tell if you are a Soft Autumn or a Deep Autumn
- 1
Gather a light and a dark neutral
Oyster or ivory for the light side, espresso or a very dark brown for the dark side. Add muted mustard and mustard gold if you have them.
- 2
Use window light and a bare face
Daylight from the front shows depth honestly, while lamps and ring lights flatten it.
- 3
Start with depth
Hold oyster, then espresso, under your chin. Note which one makes your face look more defined and which one makes it disappear.
- 4
Then test clarity
Swap muted mustard and mustard gold. If both tests point to the same season, you have your answer; if they disagree, look at Warm Autumn too, the autumn between them.

FAQ
Can a Soft Autumn have dark hair?
Yes. Hair is only one part of the picture. Medium to dark brown hair with a soft, golden tone can still belong to a Soft Autumn when the eyes are muted and hair, skin and eyes sit close together. What points to Deep Autumn is overall depth and richness, not dark hair alone.
Can a Deep Autumn wear muted colors?
Some, as neutrals: dark khaki is a Deep Autumn neutral and has a muted cast. Near the face, though, greyed colors like warm taupe or dusty peach tend to make deep coloring look dull and tired. Keep the face in saturated shades and wear the muted ones lower down.
Can a Soft Autumn wear dark colors?
Up to a medium-dark level. Coffee brown and khaki are Soft Autumn neutrals and give an outfit weight without overpowering it. Espresso, warm charcoal and brick red near the face usually look heavy, so wear anything that dark away from the face and keep a lighter color like oyster at the collar.
What replaces black for each of them?
Black is among the worst colors of Soft Autumn, and coffee brown or khaki does its job. A Deep Autumn has espresso and warm charcoal, both nearly as dark as black but warmer, so a dark suit or dress keeps its weight without draining the face.
Which hair colors suit a Soft Autumn or a Deep Autumn?
Soft Autumns tend to suit their own muted golden brown or dark blond, softened further with caramel lowlights. Deep Autumns suit rich dark brown, espresso or dark chestnut. Going much darker than your natural color makes a Soft Autumn look harsh, and going much lighter makes a Deep Autumn look faded.
What makeup works for Soft Autumn vs Deep Autumn?
Soft Autumn makeup stays close to the skin: dusty peach blush, warm rose or soft rust lips, taupe and khaki eyeshadow, in a matte or satin finish. Deep Autumn makeup can carry more: brick red or deep rust lips, with bronze, deep olive and espresso around the eyes.
What if neither Soft Autumn nor Deep Autumn looks right?
Then Warm Autumn is worth a look. It sits between the two: deeper and richer than Soft Autumn, lighter and more golden than Deep Autumn. If pumpkin orange, olive green and terracotta suit you better than either palette here, that may be your answer. The free reading checks all twelve seasons at once.
